A BAT started it but we can end it

As the world struggles to come to terms with this pandemic Coronavirus, let’s take a minute to think how it all started. Apparently, someone in Wuhan province China ate a BAT and this has made the world sick and loose about 33 trillion dollars, considering the US stock exchange alone. This is mind blowing, are we really so vulnerable to a virus which sends the world into panic and changes our whole way of life overnight?

Small and medium sized companies are the backbone of our economy, and these have suffered the most, even though they have played no part in this crash, other than work hard and reinvest profits. They have employed people, exported goods and risked their assets and used their talents to pay taxes which in the end don’t revert to their benefit as they now risk bankruptcy.

How will governments save these companies without truly understanding them and their needs. We need to do everything to save these entrepreneurs, these brave and vital people in our economy. We need to act quickly by dropping direct taxes and suppling them with interest free loans to ensure they keep paying salaries and stay open so that they are still around to fight another day. Alternatively, we run the risk of mass closures and mass unemployment becoming a reality once more.

If action is not taken it will cause further panic and in truth take our economy into a critical condition which will take years for us to recover from. This time Portugal doesn’t have Angola to sell too, as this time the whole world is on life support. We need our leaders to act fast, independently and decisively or all the good work done over the past 6 years will vanish in a flash. If decisions and actions are not done fast and effectively then the world will go into a depression. This is a breeding ground for the rise of radical leaders and the risk of conflict will increase substantially. Especially when you find yourself in a “nothing to lose” environment.

Our governments and leaders have been short sighted and dishonest long enough, it’s time they tell the truth and make the tough decisions. We are tired of periods of prosperity followed by periods of recession. Our governments concentrate on the wrong indicators of share market growth instead of true-life indicators. They haven’t looked after these small and medium sized companies who are actually the base support of the large listed companies and the population as a whole. We have built a house of cards in just 12 short years since the 2008 crisis, let’s not do it again. Let’s learn from this and give value where value is due and create wealth for all more fairly. By being honest, they will reduce the panic buying at supermarkets and the pressure on our health system. We have wasted the last few years and now need to ensure we do everything possible to save our economy and make the next economy an economy for all.

As citizens it’s our responsibility to elect our leaders and encourage future elected leaders not to repeat the mistakes of the past. We need to care again, keep them honest, ultimately we need to give a shit again as our future depends on it.
